Green Eco-Friendly New Year’s Celebration with Resolutions For 2011

With it being the last week of December, it is time to start looking at New Year’s resolutions for next year.  When coming up with what you want to do differently next year, make sure you include one or two (or even ten) of the following green resolutions:
  • I will change all of my light bulbs this year to energy saving ones (CFLs or LEDs).
  • I will install water saving devices in my bathroom on my toilet and shower.
  • I will try to use my car less and bike and/or walk more.  (I would shoot for a least once a week).
  • I will use a reusable coffee cup.
  • I will buy a programmable thermostat.
  • I will turn down the thermostat at night.
  • I will recycle newspapers, cans, plastic, and cardboard.
  • I will plant at least one tree.
  • I will buy recycled products.
  • I will use cloth cleaning towels (preferably bamboo).
  • I will use reusable cloth bags when I go shopping.  I will also leave these bags in my car, so I will have them when I need them.
  • I will reduce my use of pesticides and other hazardous household chemicals.
  • I will use biodegradable laundry soap instead petroleum based ones.
  • I will compost.
  • I will turn off the shower when I am washing my hair and washing my body to save water.
  • I will stop buying bottled water.
  • I will visit CatalogChoice.org to put a stop to unwanted catalogs that end up in my mailbox. This means less pollution and less waste.
  • I will quit using hot water in my washing machine.  (Did you know about 90% of the energy a washing machine uses is to heat the water?)
  • I will hang my clothes outside to dry.  (Did you know that the second biggest household energy user, after the refrigerator, is the clothes dryer? Over drying your clothes can end up costing you as well.)
  • I will use my dishwasher more.  (A dishwasher uses a third less water than washing the dishes by hand).
  • I will lower the temperature in my refrigerator to between 38 and 42 degrees (F). This temperature will protect my food from spoiling while saving electricity.
  • I will give up dry cleaning.
  • I will check the tire pressure regularly on my vehicles.  If every American kept their tires properly inflated, we could save 2.8 billion gallons of gas a year!
  • I will let my car idle less.  Idling for more than 10 seconds wastes more gas than is needed for startup.
  • I will turn off my computer at night.  By doing so, I will save an average of $90 of electricity a year.
  • When it becomes available in my area, I will purchase green power from my local utility.
  • I will sign up for online billing.  Not only does this help save trees, it also eliminates the fossil fuel needed to get all those billing envelopes back and forth.
Now, this list is not all or nothing.  You can definitely pick what changes you can make in your life.  What New Year’s resolutions are you making this year?

Please i request you all of my blog readers and my visitors celebrate this new year with eco friendly programs.and also spread this news to all of your peoples. We all can make the differences in nature.

Rain Water Harvesting is a Good Technique

Only a small fraction of water available on the earth is fit for use of plants , animals and humans . Most of the water is in the oceans and it cannot be used directly . When the level of the ground water decreases drastically . this cannot be used any more.

The total amount of water on earth remains the same, but, the water available for use is very limited and is decreasing with over usage. the demand for water is increasing day by day more water is being  used for producing food and by the industries. Hence, its very important that water is used carefully.
One way of increasing the availability of water is to collect rainwater and store it for later use. Collecting rainwater in this way is called rainwater harvesting. the basic idea behind rainwater harvesting is "catch water where it falls". there are two techniques of rainwater harvesting:
1 . Rofftop harvesting : in this system the rainwater is collected from the rofftop to a storage tank, through pipes. This water may contain soil from the roff and need filtering before its used.  Instead of collecting rainwater in the tank, the pipes can go directly into a pit in the ground. then seeps into the soil to recharge or, refill the ground water.
2 .Another option is to allow water to go into the ground directly     from the roadside drains that collect rainwater.

Save My Nature World | Save Trees & Plant More

When we talk about the environment, is actually very sad for me, because at present the country formerly known as the equatorial emerald designation has changed, now stretches of forest that had been felled by many parties who are not responsible, once fertile fields are now inundated causing rot of rice, when the summer will was starting to shine and if the rain season will be floods, lands slides resilient ubiquitous.
Actually at this moment in our country has much to do reforestation and planting a million trees by the people who care about the environment.

This is very worrying for me, but some time ago in the area where we live is planting a million trees, followed by concerned citizens, every house is hoped to plant one fruit tree seedlings supplied by the government, this is a great relief because the area we have many industries that are less concerned with environmental impact.

But we will keep trying to plant a tree and tried to continue caring for trees for our grand children's future.

Nature will not wait while we negotiate, says Ban Ki-moon

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, trying to revive long-stalled climate talks, told world environment ministers on Tuesday he is “deeply concerned” that many years of negotiations have proven largely fruitless.
“The pace of human-induced climate change is accelerating. We need results now, results that curb global greenhouse emissions,” Mr. Ban declared at the opening of high-level talks at the annual U.N. climate conference.

“I am deeply concerned that our efforts so far have been insufficient,” the U.N. chief told delegates.
“Nature will not wait while we negotiate,” he said. “Science warns that the window of opportunity to prevent uncontrolled climate change will soon close.”U.N. environment chief, Achim Steiner, reminded the conference that countries’ current, voluntary pledges to reduce emissions would, at best, offer the world limited protection against serious damage from shifts in climate.

Lives at 'high risk'
Another reminder came from the mountains of south Asia: In a new report, experts said people’s lives and livelihoods are at “high risk” as warming melts Himalayan glaciers, sending floods crashing down from overloaded mountain lakes and depriving farmers of steady water sources.Low-lying Pacific island states, in particular, are losing shoreline to rising seas, expanding from heat and the runoff of melting land ice. Following Mr. Ban to the podium, President Marcus Stephen of Nauru, one of those states, said the reality of climate change has been lost in scientific, economic and technical jargon.
“Without bold action, it will be left to our children to come up with the words to convey the tragedy of losing our homelands when it didn’t have to be this way,” he said.Despite such evidence of growing impacts, and scientists’ warnings that temperatures will rise sharply in this century, nations have made little progress over the past decade toward a new global pact on emissions cuts to replace the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. The Republican rebound in Washington could delay action even further.Instead, environment ministers will focus on secondary tools for confronting global warming, laying the groundwork, for example, for a “green fund” of $100 billion a year by 2020.Financed by richer nations, the fund would support poorer nations in converting to cleaner energy sources and in adapting to a shifting climate that may damage people’s health, agriculture and economies in general.Negotiators also hope to agree on a mechanism giving poorer countries easier access to the patented green technology of advanced countries, and on pinning down more elements of a complex plan to compensate developing nations for protecting their climate-friendly forests.
Decisions ripe for adoption'

“Some important decisions are ripe for adoption, on protecting forests, on climate adaptation, technology and some elements of finance,” Mr. Ban told reporters.
He urged governments “to be flexible and to negotiate in a spirit of compromise and common sense for the good of all the peoples.”

Global Warming Changes The Butterfly Behavior and Butterfly Habitat

Butterflies inhabit every continent except Antarctica. Flitting from flower to flower, they assist in pollination. People are awed by their fragile beauty but more importantly, butterflies indicate the health of the environment. Cold-blooded, butterflies are dependent upon temperature, just as are rodents, birds, frogs and other insects. Measuring butterfly response to warming temperature helps researchers all over the world gauge the effect of climate change, and researchers are finding that butterflies are seeking new habitat to find the temperatures they need.

In an article titled, "Butterflies Across Europe Face Crisis as Climate Change Looms," researchers warn that Europe will lose much of its biodiversity due to global warming as indicated by a study of butterfly distribution conducted by the Climatic Risk Atlas of European Butterflies, which involves hundreds of European scientists. One of the authors of the study, Dr Josef Settele, said: "The Atlas shows for the first time how the majority of European butterflies might respond to climate change. Most species will have to shift their distribution radically."

In Great Britain, declines in butterflies led researchers to consider saving the butterflies by moving them to cooler areas. Researchers at Durham University caught Marbled White and Small Skipper butterflies in North Yorkshire, and transplanted them to County Durham and Northumberland where, eight years later, the species were found to be thriving. Professor Brian Huntley of Durham University hailed this experiment in "assisted colonisation" as a possible role in wildlife conservation.
This idea is also being pondered among conservation biologists in the United States. Known as "assisted migration" moving a butterfly to a more congenial place presents many problems. Will a butterfly fit in the new home? What about the plants it depends on or other aspects of its habitat? Which butterflies should be moved?

At UC Davis, California, Arthur Shapiro, professor of evolution and ecology for 35 years, monitored fixed routes for butterfly populations twice a month at ten sites from Suisun Bay to the Sierra Nevada in central California, accumulating data on over 150 species of butterflies. On April 18, 2005, Shapiro counted 21 species and 378 individual butterflies in Gates Canyon near Vacaville.
On April 18 of the following year, 2006, Shapiro counted just 10 species and 43 individual butterflies. "Butterflies," Shapiro notes in 2010, "are being hit hard by the combination of lower temperatures and habitat loss."

"I used to be able to walk 15 minutes from my lab and find common sootywing larvae. Now I know of only one permanent colony in the whole county," Shapiro says. "Butterflies that were once considered utterly common, including willow hairstreak, large marble and West Coast lady, are going into a tailspin."

Shapiro reported three major findings: Butterfly diversity is being lost at sea level but is increasing at tree line as butterflies migrate to cooler areas. High elevation butterflies are being lost since they cannot move higher. When an area changes from rural to urban or suburban, the greatest butterfly losses occur.

At the University of Melbourne, Australia, butterflies are found to be emerging 10 days earlier than they did 65 years ago. This led researchers to establish, for the first time, a causal link between "increasing greenhouse gases, regional warming, and the change in timing of a natural event." Researchers found that air temperature around the city of Melbourne has been increasing incrementally every decade, and, over the 65 year period, the Common Brown butterfly (Heteronympha merope) has shifted its emergence date 1.6 days earlier per decade.

India goes green in technology

Bangalore: Joining the world to fight climate change, it was over an year ago that Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh opined that the country must invest in its own environmentally friendly technologies. India being the world's fourth-largest polluter has been pumping in a lot of money to develop expensive and efficient green technologies to curb carbon emissions.

Green technology or greentech (otherwise called clean technology) is the application of the environmental science to conserve the natural environment and resources, and to curb the negative impacts of human involvement. Sustainable development is the core of green technologies.
During his recent India visit, U.S. President Barack Obama said his country will support the second green revolution in agriculture in India. He suggested that India and U.S. should work together to bring about a more sustainable Evergreen Revolution.India's environment minister, Jairam Ramesh, has asked the rich nations to make green technology available to developing countries free of charge.
Although criticized for the slow and indifferent approach of Indian industry towards green technologies at the beginning, now the Indian entrepreneurs are taking to green technologies with a relish. Many companies are collaborating with firms around the world on developing green technologies especially in five main areas such as - integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) for power generation; energy efficient technology adoption in Indian SMEs, specifically the glass and foundry industries; wind energy; solar photovoltaic (PV) cells; and hybrid vehicles.

A survey conducted by workspace solutions provider Regus revealed that at least 30 percent of Indian companies monitor their carbon footprint compared to a global average of 19 percent. The study also shows that atleast 85 percent of Indian companies have declared that government tax breaks are required to accelerate green investment take up. It should also be noted that 25 percent of small companies in India monitor their carbon foot print compared to 45 percent of large businesses.

All major technology companies are committed to green technologies and are going eco-friendly with their products. Dell, which is considered to be the greenest company in the U.S. by many, uses bamboo packaging. Apple has cut down the packaging for its products to a fraction of what it once was. Intel makes sure that its processors deliver the same performance without using halogen or lead.Valuing the proactive steps taken towards green technology, Wipro Technologies was chosen for the IT company of the year award by a Springboard research. In order to accelerate the pace of adopting the green technologies in India, the government of India is setting up a new body with a corpus of up to  200 crore to help companies develop environment- friendly technologies for hybrid and electric vehicles. The National Electric Mobility Mission does promote eco-friendly technologies as an alternative to the use of non-renewable fuels.

Anticipating the growth in this sector, many have started their operations in the green energy space. A lot of venture capitalists are coming up to fund any projects aimed at clean technologies. Vinod Khosla, the co-founder of Sun Microsystems, has raised $1.1 billion venture capital fund for clean energy technology. Suzlon Energy, Orient Green Power, Indowind Energy, Suryachakra Power Corporation, NEPC India are some of the major energy companies in India.Green technology is essential for sustainable development in the long-run.

To develop and tap green technology, India has to focus on social awareness programs and should conduct massive campaign about the need of environment-friendly technologies. The industrial leaders should take initiative to implement more implement green technologies and the government should back such products. A 'Green IT' should be the slogan of the Indian IT industry.

Scientists develop green technique to transform carbon dioxide

Scientists at Singapore’s Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN) have developed a green technique to transform carbon dioxide into useful compounds for pharmaceuticals and chemicals industries.
The country’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A* STAR) said on Tuesday that the scientists have devised a new environmentally friendly technique to transform carbon dioxide, an abundant and renewable carbon source, into highly functionalized propiolic acids.

These acids are basic building blocks for the synthesis of a wide range of pharmaceuticals such as cholesterol— reducing drugs and peptidomimetic and other small molecule inhibitors that may be used, for example, to kill cancer cells.

IBN’s approach involves the direct activation of the CH bond and carboxylation of the terminal alkynes using a novel copper and copperN—heterocyclic carbene catalyst that the researchers developed specifically for this reaction.

Moving forward, the IBN researchers hope to further develop this technology for the large—scale synthesis of industrial chemicals from carbon dioxide.

Climate funding may need taxes on flight tickets, forex deals: U.N. report

Taxes on international flights, shipping and financial transactions, as well as a global carbon price of $20 to $25 may be key to annually mobilizing $100 billion in climate funding by 2020, according to the United Nations high level advisory group on climate change financing which submitted its report in New York on Friday.

At UN climate summit held in Copenhagen last year, developed countries committed to a goal of jointly mobilising $100 billion per year to meet the needs of developing countries with regard to climate change mitigation and adaptation.

The 21-member advisory group set up to chart a course to meet this goal includes Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia, as well as British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, economist Nicholas Stern and financier George Soros.Terming the target as “challenging but feasible,” the report says that financing could come from both public and private sources.

“If we are to reach this goal, we will need a mix of new public sources, a scaling-up of existing public sources and increased private flows. A carbon price in the range of $20-25 by 2020 will be important to meet the goal,” it said. While carbon trades at about that level in the European market today, many other developed countries – significantly, the United States – have resisted any move to put a price on carbon.

However, this could potentially raise $30 billion per year, and would also provide incentives for further mitigation actions, according to the advisory group. The report also called for exploring revenue sources such as international carbon taxes. This could mean a tax or trading system for the fuel emissions of international airlines or merchant ships, or even a fee on passenger air tickets, which has the potential to raise $10 billion per year. Taxing forex transactions could garner another $10 billion.

Further carbon taxes in developed countries and redeploying fossil fuel subsidies could be other sources of funding. The report will be discussed at the next U.N. climate summit to be held in Cancun, Mexico, later this month. Concrete pledges and action on climate funding is seen as crucial to the negotiations to be held there. “Without an agreement on finance we won't reach an agreement on climate,” warned the Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, a co-chair of the advisory group.

“This is not about charity. It is about doing the right thing for those who are suffering most from a crisis that they did least to cause,” said U.N. Secretary-General Ban ki-Moon, while accepting the report.

Now a Days Diwali is Only a Pollution?

Deepavali (also spelled Divali in few countries) or Diwali, popularly known as the festival of lights, is an important five-day festival in Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism, occurring between mid-October and mid-November. For Hindus, Diwali is the most important festival of the year and is celebrated in families by performing traditional activities together in their homes. Deepavali is an official holiday in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Mauritius, Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, Suriname, Malaysia, Singapore, and Fiji.

Most Indian business communities begin the financial year on the first day of Diwali. And many more postive points on that day.

But Now a days as i think its only a source of pollution and nothing else.and in future it can be a major factor regarding global warming. because all countries are celebrating and giving a very large Amount of Pollution Factor. And many more problems can be found like air pollution, Light pollution, Sound pollution, Allergic diseases, and many more.

Now a Days Deepawali also creates a lack of electricity or wastage of electric sources.

And Mostly People are not thinking about it. And those people that are caring about nature and global warming are also suffering from allergic reactions and all noise problems.

People must have to know about global warming issues.and the government must need to do something about it. government must make some rules on it to control air pollution.government must think about those people that are suffering from air pollution and allergic reactions.

So we have to think about it really.we have to staup up in unity to make some real changes.

Celebrate Eco-Friendly Deepawali....

Celebrate Eco-Friendly Deepawali....

Diwali is the one festival in India which is celebrated by all irrespective of caste, creed and religion. Diwali is celebrated to acknowledge the victory of good over evil. And the lighting of earthen lamps or diyas on a moonless night signifies a new beginning of enlightenment and the end of darkness of ignorance.

Earlier Diwali celebration meant house cleaning and decoration, performing traditional Lakshmi pooja, lightening of diyas in the evening and family get-together. But with the changing time the style of celebrating Diwali has also changed drastically. Now Diwali celebrations mean electric illumination and bursting noisy fire crackers. This change in the celebration style has imposed many negative effects on the environment; some of the effects are listed below:-

Excessive air pollution
Excessive noise pollution
Excessive power consumption
Hearing loss
High blood pressure
Sleeping disturbances
Asthma
Headache
Irritability
Skin allergies
Fatigue
Eye related problems
Respiratory problems

How to Celebrate Eco-Friendly Deepawali ???

•Do celebrate the festival of lights with less pollution and do help poor people by offering food and clothing rather than spending huge moneyfor purchasing crackers.

•Follow the principle of nature conservation, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rethink Refuse.

•Consume less electricity to light your house as we are in the age of energy crisis, and we are indirectly polluting the mother earth.

•Explode few crackers for the significance of Diwali.

•Explode less noise crackers as this will help aged and others and you will also help in avoiding noise pollution.

""Do celebrate clean and green Diwali"""

Benefits of Eco Friendly Green Deepavali

Diwali celebrations are associated with pollution rather than their traditional significance. Here is how to bring back the true spirit of Diwali
Diwali is known as the 'festival of lights'. Diyas (clay lamps) are lit to chase away the darkness of ignorance and welcome the bright light of enlightenment. However, in our zest to celebrate this festival, there is a tendency to go overboard. Carelessness during Diwali celebrations can have a detrimental effect on the environment and endanger your own safety. Here are some of the major offenders in these celebrations.

Crackers

Firecrackers are traditionally perceived as being the highlight of Diwali celebrations. Simple sparklers have now given way to elaborate fireworks that can light up the entire sky above your home. Most people believe that greater the fireworks, better the celebrations. However, very few people stop to think just how harmful these crackers are for the environment.

To begin with, all available crackers contain a large amount of toxic substances. These affect people in different ways as follows;

  • Copper: Causes irritation in the respiratory tract, which leads to respiratory ailments.
  • Cadmium: Reduces the oxygen carrying capacity of blood, leading to anaemia. It also causes kidney damage.
  • Lead: Lead in the body has a harmful effect on the nervous system.
  • Magnesium: Magnesium fumes cause a condition known as metal fume fever. This is a fever accompanied by a metallic taste in the mouth.
  • Zinc: Also causes metal fume fever. In addition, it also induces vomiting.
  • Sodium: Sodium is a highly reactive element. It combines with moisture in the air and on the skin, causing burns.
These toxic substances are not just harmful to human beings, but to all living creatures. They tend to remain in the atmosphere for extended periods. So their harmful effects are experienced long after Diwali celebrations are ended.

Fireworks also produce a lot of smoke, when they are burnt. Apart from being a source of toxic fumes, the smoke also causes great discomfort. People suffering from asthma and other respiratory conditions have no other choice but to stay indoors during Diwali. They are unable to go outside for fear of any of the smoke getting into their lungs and triggering an attack.

Fireworks also bring with them a lot of noise. Diwali favourites like the 'Laxmi bomb' produce a sound of 100 decibels when they are burst. In comparison, any sound beyond 50 decibels is classified as being noise. The noise produced by crackers is extremely hazardous to health.

Sudden noise can cause temporary hearing loss. Extended exposure could lead to permanent hearing loss. Crackers burst indiscriminately cause disturbances in sleep. This can be especially upsetting to people who require undisturbed rest like babies and elderly people. Noise also frightens children and household pets, causing them to experience anxiety.

Most fireworks are made by factories which employ children as labourers. These young children are forced to handle the toxic substances that go into these crackers. As a result, they contract diseases associated with these substances. Due to lack of medical aid, many of these children do not live beyond their teenage years.

Power Consumption
Since Diwali is a festival of lights, people decorate their homes by lighting them up. This places a huge load on the power supply system. Electric lights are used to decorate entire homes, offices, and roads. Sometimes, these lights are even left on even during the day. This is a waste of energy. It is better to switch to the traditional oil lamps. Even though they consume oil, these lamps are usually used only for a short time.

Consumerism
Along with light, Diwali is also associated with wealth. People believe that this is an auspicious time to purchase goods. The newspapers are full of advertisements offering discounts, sales, and free gifts. Deluded by these claims, consumers tend to go out and buy items that they do not really need. These items like television sets, DVD players, etc. tend to lie unused and are then discarded. This results in wastage of precious natural resources that go into making these items. In addition, most of these items are non degradable. When they are discarded, they lie in landfills and garbage dumps, sometimes for years on end.

Celebrating Diwali does not mean completely giving up the things you love. However, it is time to go back to the traditional Diwali celebrations of the past. Not only will you be helping to save the environment but also you will understand better the true meaning of Diwali.

Solar industry has new opportunities

Building energy saving in the idea of low-carbon economy, China's semiconductor lighting industry is bigger cake. According to analysis of relevant institutions, in 2010, the Chinese LED industry output to more than 150 billion yuan; output doubled from 2008, 2008, total output value of about 700 million. Tempting cakes from the current excitement of professional exhibition and forum can be a good overview.

Compared with traditional lighting, led tube with energy, materials, environmental protection and other advantages, it is consistent with the current sustainable low-carbon, green economy trends. In the state, "City of ten thousand ten" items such as the Shanghai World Expo promotion, LED industry, new opportunities.

As the world's leading exhibition and events organizer, Reed Exhibitions, in recent years, new sources and new energy to the solar water heater industry into a continuing concern, GreenLighting Shanghai2010 received industry praise. Reed Exhibitions Josephine Lee, Vice President of Eastern Region that, LED lighting, while maintaining the phenomenal growth, industry is also facing new challenges and problems.

On the product itself, unlike traditional lighting specifications have been standardized to reduce manufacturing costs, forklift, a high degree of customization, resulting in low capacity utilization. In addition, LED point light source characteristics, resulting in LED lighting to be integrated with the bulb sale, raised the cost of LED lighting business risk, these factors lead directly to LED products, expensive than traditional products 5-10 times, which led to popularity of LED products difficult.

On the other hand, gate opener technology and the existence of certain barriers to entry. Early December 2009, UL8750 standards published and national and local standards have also launched the design of LED application products put forward higher requirements. Cost and quality requirements in the dual pressures of the design of LED products, will face even greater challenges.

In addition, the international to the domestic pvc window manufacturers to bring great pressure on companies. Information from Reed Exhibitions shows the various international new lighting, new energy sources & Expo and Congress are brought together the whole industry chain of led tube manufacturers, the international giant which is the new light source in the international New Energy Lighting Exhibition & Forum get together appearance. It is understood that, although there is still a long time away from the opening GreenLightingShanghai2011, Nichia, Seoul Semiconductor and other international LED chip makers have reserved booth. Currently, light pollution has to affect human health, and the point can no longer be ignored. The LED, as no flicker, no UV radiation, no electromagnetic radiation, low heat radiation characteristics, coupled with application of light diffusion technology to eliminate glare, making it a truly healthy source.

LED light is known as the "green light energy," said the products do not contain fastener, lead the international limit of six hazardous substances in the same brightness, the power consumption of only ordinary incandescent 1 / 10, their life can be extended 50 times has become the world's fourth-generation representatives of energy-saving products. Energy and environmental issues in today's increasingly prominent, energy saving and emission reduction becomes important and urgent than thermostat. Failure to develop alternative energy sources in the premise of how the existing energy resources more efficient use of energy shortage problem is to solve an effective way. The LED lights with energy efficient features as, LED industry is bound to become national, regional, and related industries and enterprises concerned and the development of hot spots.

Investment in solar power projects to double by 2015

New Delhi: With investment in solar power projects expected to double in the next five years, photovoltaics could account for nine percent of the global power demand by 2030, according to a study.
Photovoltaics (PV) is a method of generating electrical power by converting solar radiation into direct current electricity using semiconductors.

The study by the European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA) and environment protection group Greenpeace International said that investment in solar projects will increase from 215 billion (around $4,800 million) today to 430 billion ($9,600 million) in 2015.
"Solar photovoltaic is a key technology to combat climate change and to secure access to clean electricity. By 2015, the global market could be twice as big as today, leading to a 430 billion investment. Our goal is to make solar photovoltaic a mainstream power source through more supportive policies around the world," said Sven Teske, senior energy expert at Greenpeace International.Current solar PV global capacity could grow from 23 GW at the beginning of 2010 to 180 GW by 2015, according to the report.
"Solar power can make a massive contribution to global electricity supply, especially in developing countries. By 2030, over 2.5 billion people could benefit from solar energy, but we need political commitment to make this happen," said Ingmar Wilhelm, president of EPIA.The report said that over 1,800 GW of PV could be installed by 2030 and this would save as much as 1.4 billion tonnes in carbon dioxide emissions every year.

‘World's biggest' solar power plant planned

Giant mirrors and solar panels in Northern Cape would reduce carbon emissions and generate one—tenth of the country's energy needs South Africa is to unveil plans this week for what it claims will be the world's biggest solar power plant — a radical step in a coal—dependent country where one in six people still lacks electricity. The project, expected to cost up to 200bn rand (GBP18.42bn), would aim by the end of its first decade to achieve an annual output of five gigawatts (GW) of electricity — currently one-tenth of South Africa's energy needs.Giant mirrors and solar panels would be spread across the Northern Cape province, which the government says is among the sunniest 3 per cent of regions in the world with minimal cloud or rain.
The government hopes the solar park will help reduce carbon emissions from Africa's biggest economy, which is still more than 90 per cent dependent on coal-fired power stations. Energy is already a high priority in South Africa where, at the end of racial apartheid, less than 40 per cent of households had electricity.

Over 16 years the governing African National Congress has undertaken a huge national expansion, with a recent survey showing that 83 per cent are now connected, but power outages are still not uncommon in both townships and middle-class suburbs. An estimated 200 foreign and domestic investors will meet this week in Upington, Northern Cape, with a view to funding the hugely ambitious solar project.

A master plan will be set out by the US engineering and construction group Fluor. This follows a viability study by the Clinton Climate Initiative, which described South Africa's “solar resource” as among the best in the world.De Vries, a special adviser to the energy minister, said the Northern Cape had been chosen for insolation readings (a measure of solar energy) that rank among the highest in the world. South Africa currently consumes 45-48GW of power per year. It is estimated this will double over the next 25 years.

“In South Africa over 90 per cent of our power comes from the burning of coal and we need to reduce this because of our international obligations on climate change,” de Vries said.
