Unfortunately, as you already know, these crackers are also going to bring a lot of pollution to the environment. Air pollution often more than doubles in every city during Diwali! Spread joy, prosperity and clean air on this festive occasion. Make your Diwali a Pure Air Lover’s Diwali and keep your pollution footprint to the minimum by:

1. Use crackers sparingly.

If we are not sensitive to the environment in our celebrations, we could cause pollution levels to rise drastically on Diwali which could have negative impact on our health and environment. Diwali is known to be a time when air and noise pollution takes on alarming proportions.

2. Decorative LED lights or eco-friendly traditional diyas are just as soothing and beautiful.

The festival of lights puts a considerably heavy load on electrical energy sources that are already overloaded. The use of electric lights to adorn homes, business establishments, monuments and roads requires a huge amount of electricity. The older tradition of burning oil lamps is a possible alternative to electric lights - even though it does use oil, the duration of the lamps is shorter. Traditional lamps and eco friendly lighting like LED lights can reduce the impact by a large extent.

3. Jute/cloth shopping bags is a great way to carry your Diwali shopping.

Consumption of packaging material and plastic bags increases to a very large extent during festivals. Solid waste created by human beings which is non biodegradable (does not easily decompose) has to be filled into holes dug up in the ground. These 'landfills' as they are called may exist for centuries without completely getting integrated into the soil. The plastic toys that you are throwing away today, may exist in a landfill several generations after yours! Opt for eco friendly and bio-degradable packaging materials.

4. Why waste when you can spare and share? This Diwali, use your resources more judiciously and share them with the less fortunate.

An indirect but equally significant impact of Diwali on nature is due to the increased consumption. Since Diwali is also a celebration of abundance and wealth - many people believe that it is a good time to buy. Often, people go out and buy new items even when they don't need them and they get discarded very soon. Waste during festivals is a huge menace.

5. This Diwali, Eco friendly gifts are, well, the friendliest gesture you can make.

Diwali is also a festival of gifting. Gifts that are thoughtful are a gesture of best wishes. Using handmade, eco-friendly gift articles not just lessen the impact on the environment but also provide a sustainable living to lots of people.

This year, p.a.l.s. is bringing you the chance to gift a tree to a loved one. All you need to do is get them to register themselves as a p.a.l. Remember, for every p.a.l. that registers, Suzlon will plant one tree. So gift a tree this Diwali. That’s how p.a.l.s. celebrate.

Wishing you all a Happy and Pure Air Deepwali.

And Be a P.A.L.

Nuclear Energy has been touted as an alternative to mainstream electricity production from fossil fuel sources. But how does Nuclear compare to fossil fuels in the long run?

Undoubtedly fossil fuels have serious issues associated with them. Peak Oil production is one such problem which will very soon make its presence felt at both the national and individual level. Another even more serious concern is the possibility of serious and perhaps irreversible climate change brought about by pollution primarily in the form of Carbon Dioxide emissions from the burning of fossil fuels.

So how does Nuclear energy stand up as an alternative to fossil fuels in terms of a sustainable source of electricity production? There are several concerns about Nuclear energy that have given it a bad name. Reactor problems such as those that caused the Three Mile Island and Chernobyl incidents, along with several others, are far fewer in number relative to the scale of electricity production than compared to casualties in the mining sector associated with oil and coal.

Storage of Nuclear waste is also largely an issue of the past with technology now available to store Nuclear waste in solid form, reducing virtually to zero the possibility of leakage, ground water contamination and so forth.

Use of fuel enrichment to produce weapons grade nuclear materials such as Plutonium-239 is an unfortunate but essential part of the economical use of nuclear fuel. It is worth remembering that no aggressive nuclear strike has been carried out since the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War Two, and that many millions of casualties have occurred in conventional warfare since that same time.

The reality for us though is that nuclear power relies upon supplies of Uranium and Plutonium that are themselves limited. While these resources may have only begun to be exploited, it is certain that if our current level of increase of energy consumption continues then Nuclear fuel will also face the prospect of its own peak production level.

It cannot be a responsible decision to replace fossil fuels with another energy source that is also doomed to run out in the foreseeable future. While those proponents of Nuclear power proclaim it as the salvation of our current situation they are not looking far enough into the future.

To make correct, responsible decisions that take into account not only our own welfare but also that of our children and their children, we need to adopt wide scale renewable energy in the form of Solar and Wind power. These proven technologies have the capacity to meet our energy demands TODAY with no adverse future effects, assuming they are implemented in an intelligent way.

It is time for Governments around the world to stop looking for excuses and start making moves that assure the coming generations a safe, energy rich and pollution free world. We need to begin implementing massive scale renewable energy immediately.

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;">
Solar Power as Renewable Energy Source

The sun has a surface temperature of about 27 million deg. C. and emits radiations covering a wide range of frequencies in all directions.

A part of the radiations fall on the earth as it goes round the sun. Allowing for the various losses of the radiation on way to the earth, on an average we receive about 800 W/m2 of solar power at the equator.

Solar radiations include infrared frequencies which provide heat and also visible radiations which provide light. The solar energy, therefore, can be used in a very versatile manner.

Photovoltaic cell-assemblies as arrays and panels are used in isolated homes and communities for providing electricity; they are also used in large power stations for utility supplies. Heat for industrial processes as well as for supplementing the large thermal power stations is provided by using the solar concentrators in large installations.

This is a truly versatile renewable energy source which is inexhaustible and also totally non-polluting.

Wind Power as Renewable Energy Source

One of the cheapest sources of renewable energy is the wind energy. Windmills have traditionally been used for pumping water (as exemplified by Holland) or for grinding grains.

These windmills have taken on the modern role of providing electricity superbly. The three bladed windmills use turbines connected to generators for producing electricity; they are installed in the form of large windmill farms over large areas.

Good wind sites are generally in remote locations often situated miles away from large load centers such as cities or industrial centers. In any case it would be difficult to install large banks of windmills within cities or near urban centers.

Rotation of Earth, unevenness in heating of the atmosphere by the sun, and irregular surface of the Earth are the basic causes of creation of winds. This is another manifestation renewable energy of the sun available in a different form.

Tidal Power as Renewable Energy Source

Tides take place due to relative motion of the earth, the sun and the moon, and the gravitational forces of these planetary bodies on the waters in the oceans.

A huge amount of water moves twice a day in and out of estuaries as tides and harnessing this amount of water could yield a great deal of energy. In the olden times tide mills had been in use in Europe as well as in USA.

Tides are more predictable than wind energy and solar energy, and energy supply from tides would be reliable and plentiful. Tidal power generation has to be tied up with other large power systems because tidal power is available only when the tides move in or out, say for a maximum of ten hours a day.

However there are large technological problems in converting the tidal flow into useful electrical power.

There are various countries actively involved in developing technologies for harnessing tidal power. It is generally widely acknowledged that tidal power has vast potential as renewable energy source for electricity generation in future.

Biomass as Renewable Energy Source
By photosynthesis chlorophyll in plants converts atmospheric carbon dioxide into carbohydrates. Biomass is like solar energy stored in the form of carbohydrates. You burn it and the solar heat is released.

Biomass has been used from ancient times for obtaining heat.

The modern technology can not only use biomass to produce electricity by burning it but can also convert it into biofuel which can be used in vehicles or convert it into combustible gases.

Whichever route we take in using biomass, it is an unavoidable truth that we shall finally face the problem of releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

There are many plants which are suited to being used for generating electricity or for being converted into bio fuels or for gasification.

There is, however, a lot of work that needs to be done to avoid fertile land being switched from production of food to production of crops as bio fuels or to avoid crops and their produce being used to produce bio fuel instead of being used for human consumption (as in case of corn, for instance).
DHAKA (AFP) – The number of households in electricity-starved
Bangladesh using solar panels has crossed the one million mark -- the
fastest expansion of solar use in the world, officials said Wednesday.

In 2002, just 7,000 households were using solar panels but now more than
a million households -- or some five million people -- gather solar
energy, said Nazmul Haq of the Infrastructure Development Company
(IDCOL).
"It's the fastest expansion of solar energy anywhere in the world," said
Haq, who heads the state-run IDCOL, which provides financing for clean
energy projects.
Not so long ago, the general view was that renewable energy was either far too expensive an option for householders, or an idealistic dream adopted by modem day hippies. Times and opinions change; possibly the high cost of fossil fuels, not only in financial, but also environmental terms, has had some impact on how seriously renewable energy is now perceived.

Many people wonder whether there is anything they can do to help the environment, and if they can, whether it is financially affordable. Surprisingly, there is an amazing array of renewable energy systems available for homeowners to adopt.

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Within 24 hours of Greenpeace’s
online initiative, more than 22,000 customers across India recently
joined the public campaign asking telecom giant Bharti-Airtel to go
clean by shifting the powering of the company’s network towers to
renewable energy.

The public campaign follows the release of
Greenpeace’s report 'Dirty Talking -Case for telcom industry to shift
from diesel to renewable', which exposed how the subsidy on diesel
has been aggressively exploited by the telecom sector, resulting in an
annual loss of around Rs 2600 crore to the state exchequer, said a press
release.

The report also highlights the immense cost and energy savings the industry could accrue through such a shift.
“Airtel
is one of the biggest customers of subsidised diesel. As the market
leader in India and a dominant telecom force globally, it’s high time
Airtel connected India and millions of their users through renewable
energy, not dirty diesel.

The company should make a commitment to phase
out diesel and switch to renewable energy and show the rest of the
telecom sector that it can be done” said Mrinmoy Chattaraj, climate and
energy campaigner, Greenpeace India.

Shift 50 p.c energy requirements to renewable energy
Greenpeace’s
campaign asks Airtel to act in line with its professed environmental
commitments by publicly disclosing the carbon emissions of its entire
business operation and establish progressive emission reduction targets
and commit to shift the sourcing of its energy requirements 50 p.c
towards renewable energy sources and phase out diesel use in its
business operations by 2015, added the release.

The campaign also asks Airtel to catalyse a low-carbon economy wide growth, by using its brand power to advocate for strong policies that promote renewable energy.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Dear friends,

Thanks to the
telecommunications sector, every new call and SMS is hurting our
environment. Lakhs of massive mobile network towers in our country run on dirty diesel.

Airtel is the market leader and trend-setter of the Indian telecom industry. If we get them to switch to renewable energy,
it will set an example for the others to follow. Customers are the
mainstay of this industry. Airtel would notice if customers ask them to
make their calls green by using clean energy to power company’s mobile
towers.

You should ask Airtel to switch to renewable energy.

http://www.greenpeace.org/india/en/What-We-Do/Stop-Climate-Change/Green-Electronics/switch-off-diesel/airtel-switch-off-diesel/

Several current and potential Airtel subscribers, asking them to switch to renewable energy will help put pressure
on them to act. Since the company is bound to provide good service to
its subscribers, they will not be able to ignore this feedback.

Like coal and nuclear, oil too is an unsustainable energy option. The Deepwater Horizon oil spill last year showed the dangers of our addiction to oil.[2]
Studies conducted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have
shown that renewable energy is capable of powering the world.[3] Airtel needs to realise this and quit dirty energy.

Tell them now.
Resolution for Earth Day :

Stop using disposable bags.

Stop using disposable soda & water bottles

Be realistic! I’m sure many of us would love to do
the overhaul on our homes and apartments to be 100% self-reliant and
GREEN! But let’s be serious, it just isn’t going to happen in one day.
Instead, keep your goals small and doable. This way you wont feel
overwhelmed and give up!

Educate! There are tons and tons of resources out
there to help you and your family stay green for cheap! Check out some
books at the library or ask your friends! Internet searches bring up
countless tools to help your family find the right path to going green.

Keep Trying! Making changes to your daily life take
time to get use to. I’ve heard that it can take several weeks for a
habit to be truly ingrained into a person’s mind. So, be patient with
yourself! Give yourself room to learn and grow as you try to make your
life a little more green!

Celebrate! When things really do take hold in your
life, I bet you wont even notice right away. It will become just a habit
to grab those cloth bags before you go to the grocery store. When you
do look back and realize the little changes you’re making for the world
in your life, dont forget to celebrate! A pat on the back, a green
picnic in the park with the family, whatever you want to do to really
enjoy your hard work and the green earth!

Share with friends! Finally, share your successes with your friends and spread your green knowledge around you!

Turn off the lights when not in use!
Its the easiest thing! We’re already well on our way!

Turn off the faucets while shaving/brushing teeth
Another easy one that I’ve never even thought of! How much water have I wasted in my life just by letting the facet run?!

Only use reusable shopping bags.
This one will take some practice, but we have our cloth bags right by
the front door so theyre hard to forget! We also have some in
bags/purses that we carry often and a couple in the car so we are never
without them! There’s really just no more excuses to not make this work!

Recycle our old electronics
This one is a little harder because we need to find the correct places
to recycle them! But a quick google search has already helped a lot!

Substitute a homemade version of something that you always buy.

Unplug the dryer and hang your clothes to dry.

Plan a screen-free day meaning no TV, no computer, no handheld electronic games.

Here is
a chance to unite the world in a common cause that will benefit all.you can suggest more ideas to all over the world through us.
SOLAR ENERGY :

Availability: The main feature of solar energy is it is available in
abundance and throughout the day time. The area of availability is so
huge that it can be tamed from anywhere and everywhere.

Cost:
It is totally free and no one is going to charge you for using solar
energy. So you can design all appliances in your home powered by solar
energy, saving your hard earned money. In fact, if you do so, any
government will appreciate it and fund you for your future projects.

Solar-furnace Pollution and Remains: All fuels which we currently use
leave behind combustion products which pollute and cause harm to the
environment. Example, whether it is coal or oil, it has combustion
products (soot) and other gases which pollute the environment. When
solar energy is tamed, there are actually no combustion happening, thus
no pollution.

Price: Depending upon the market, oil prices
may vary. But solar power generation and utility does not depend on
market variations.

Machinery and Maintenance: There is no
machinery involved in the generation of electricity and power. Thus
there are fewer maintenance problems and breakdowns. No spare parts
cost as in case of generators.

Remote Utility: The
availability of solar power anywhere and everywhere makes it possible
to generate electricity even in remote locations where power cables
cannot reach or the amount of power available is inadequate. You can
set up your own generating station and live comfortably.

Renewable: Unlike fossil fuels, the usage of solar power causes no
depletion in its availability. It is totally renewable for all
practical purposes.

No greenhouse gas emissions and this
clean source of energy making it possible to claim as one of the energy
sources for the future.

Noise and other hazards: The
generation of power from solar energy is a quiet operation and does not
require huge population to take care of it. There are no hazards to
the environment and the people when solar energy is used.

Lesser running cost and zero health hazards.

Government Grants: Local Governments and NGO’s are granting funds for
those who use and implement new solar powered domestic appliances. Some
of the organizations offer financial help for the students to carry
out research on usage and taming of solar power for the daily
requirements.

Few Disadvantages :

People don’t encourage or come forward to use it as the initial
installation cost is so high that it makes sense for them to use
domestic power from the power plants.

The cost of the solar
panels is too high and it occupies more space for generation of small
amount of power, which typically can be interpreted as the power/space
ratio being too high.

Solar house During night time, since there is no sun light, you have to rely upon the domestic power supply.

If you want to make use of the solar power during night time, then you
have to use a separate storage device to store the solar energy.

The power generation will reduce depending upon the amount of sunlight.

Also if the climate is cloudy or rainy or during winter season, then one cannot produce power from solar energy.

The installation on the roofs of your house may not be suitable with
the angle of incidence of the sun light, thus making it less suitable
for power generation.

The power generated may not be sufficient
enough to support your entire domestic needs. Also this form of energy
is not suitable for industries as the power demand is too high.

Solar power generation will not be effective in cold countries which are in high northern and southern latitudes.

Technically, D.C power is produced by the solar cells. For using it, this has to be converted into A.C before using it.

Even
though the solar energy has too many disadvantages, they are being
overcome by many new ideas and technical developments. Thus it is very
important to develop a system of power generation from sunlight and
optimize it before it is too late to save our Planet Earth.

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;">
Following a European directive urging governments to promote biofuels and other renewable energy sources for transportation as replacements for petrol and diesel, Sweden has decided to take the bull by the horns.

Sweden has the world's first biogas powered train running of the 75 mile long coastal stretch between the cities of Linkoeping (South of Stockholm) and Vaestervik (Eastern Baltic). "Amanda" as the train has been named has been carrying passengers since the summer of 2005.

The biogas train is as environmentally friendly as trains can get. While electric trains are considered non-pollutant, they often draw their energy from unclean power sources.

And all of the current methods for generating electricity have their problems. Burning fossil fuels creates the majority of today's air pollution, which negatively affects air, water and land, which in turn affects our own health. Hydroelectricity, where large dams are used to create energy from water, destroys ecosystems and kills wildlife.

And generating power from the wind and sun only works when the sun is out or the wind is blowing, and wind turbines are often criticized for being ugly. So a renewable energy source which can also be stored relatively easily, like biogas, looks like the perfect solution.

Biogas is produced when organic materials decompose in the absence of oxygen - for example in landfill sites or anaerobic digesters. Fitted with two biogas bus engines, Amanda can carry up to 54 passengers at speeds of up to 80mph and has a range of almost 375 miles before refueling. The train is equipped with eleven canisters containing enough gas to run for 600 kilometers (375 miles) before needing a refill, and can reach a maximum speed of 130 kilometers (80 miles) per hour". Biogas is made up of shredded plant materials and animal waste, which are then mixed with water in a tank. Once the waste has decomposed, a gas is formed that can be stored and used as fuel. In addition to the environmental aspect, biogas has the added advantage that it can be produced locally and supply is not dependent on imports. Biogas produced in anaerobic digesters consists of methane (50%-80%), carbon dioxide (20%-50%), and trace levels of other gases such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen sulfide.

The biogas used by the train is produced locally at the Vaestervik sewage treatment plant. In Linkoeping another plant uses waste products from a local abattoir to produce further biogas. The fat, blood, unwanted organs, and guts of about 30 cows stewed for one month are all that is needed to produce sufficient biogas to power the train to the other end of the line.

The train was developed by Svensk Biogas. A standard 24m long diesel powered train was converted by replacing the diesel engines with two 210kW Volvo GH 10 B biogas bus engines and adding gas storage cylinders to hold the biogas fuel. Development of the biogas train cost the company over 1 million Euro.

Diesel powered trains are currently 20% cheaper to run than biogas trains however as oil prices increase the environmental benefits of the biogas train will be joined by economical befits.

Currently 25% of all energy use in Sweden is derived from biomass and the country intends to become carbon free by 2050. All the buses in Linkoeping are already powered by biogas.

Trains are a relatively efficient way to move goods and people around, but cheap oil has meant that people and companies prefer the flexibility of cars and trucks. In the near future, we certainly won't have much of a choice to start using them more as long distance travel by road becomes increasingly expensive. Having them run on biogas is just making a smart choice even smarter.

The country, home to nine million people, currently has 779 biogas buses and more than 4,500 cars that run on a mixture of petrol and either biogas or natural gas, according to the Swedish environment ministry.

See the most important facts of the UN Climate change Report 2007 at a glance.Over the Last 100 years, the average temperature of the air near the Earth's surface has risen a little less than 1* celsius (0.74 +- 0.18*C, or 1.3 +- 0.32* Fahrenheit).

As said, the major cause of global warming is the emission of green house gas like carbon dioxide, methane oxide etc into the atmosphere.

The major source of carbon dioxide is the power plants. These power plants emit large amount of carbon dioxide produced from burning of fossil fuels for the purpose of electricity generation. about twenty percent of carbon dioxide emitted in the atmosphere comes from burning of gasoline in the engines of the vehicles.

this is true for most of the developed countries. building, both commercial and residential represent a larger source of global warming pollution than cars & trucks.

Building of these structures require a lot of fule to be burnt which emits a large amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Methane is more than 20 times as effectual as C02 at entrapping heat in the atmosphere. bacteria in bogs and fossil fuel manufacture.

when fields are flooded, anaerobic situation build up and the organic matter in the soil decays\, releasing methane to the atmosphere. the mail sources of nitrous oxide ninclude nylon and nitric acid production, car with catalytic converters, the use of fertilizers in agriculture ans the burning of organic matter.

Another Cause of global warming is deforestation that is caused by cutting and burning of forests for the purpose of residence and industrialization.
