Nuclear Power Energy - A Non Renewable Energy Resource

Nuclear Energy has been touted as an alternative to mainstream electricity production from fossil fuel sources.  But how does Nuclear compare to fossil fuels in the long run?

Undoubtedly fossil fuels have serious issues associated with them.  Peak Oil production is one such problem which will very soon make its presence felt at both the national and individual level.  Another even more serious concern is the possibility of serious and perhaps irreversible climate change brought about by pollution primarily in the form of Carbon Dioxide emissions from the burning of fossil fuels.

So how does Nuclear energy stand up as an alternative to fossil fuels in terms of a sustainable source of electricity production?  There are several concerns about Nuclear energy that have given it a bad name.  Reactor problems such as those that caused the Three Mile Island and Chernobyl incidents, along with several others, are far fewer in number relative to the scale of electricity production than compared to casualties in the mining sector associated with oil and coal.

Storage of Nuclear waste is also largely an issue of the past with technology now available to store Nuclear waste in solid form, reducing virtually to zero the possibility of leakage, ground water contamination and so forth.

Use of fuel enrichment to produce weapons grade nuclear materials such as Plutonium-239 is an unfortunate but essential part of the economical use of nuclear fuel.  It is worth remembering that no aggressive nuclear strike has been carried out since the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War Two, and that many millions of casualties have occurred in conventional warfare since that same time.

The reality for us though is that nuclear power relies upon supplies of Uranium and Plutonium that are themselves limited.  While these resources may have only begun to be exploited, it is certain that if our current level of increase of energy consumption continues then Nuclear fuel will also face the prospect of its own peak production level.

It cannot be a responsible decision to replace fossil fuels with another energy source that is also doomed to run out in the foreseeable future.  While those proponents of Nuclear power proclaim it as the salvation of our current situation they are not looking far enough into the future.

To make correct, responsible decisions that take into account not only our own welfare but also that of our children and their children, we need to adopt wide scale renewable energy in the form of Solar and Wind power.  These proven technologies have the capacity to meet our energy demands TODAY with no adverse future effects, assuming they are implemented in an intelligent way.

It is time for Governments around the world to stop looking for excuses and start making moves that assure the coming generations a safe, energy rich and pollution free world.  We need to begin implementing massive scale renewable energy immediately.

Ask Bharti Airtel: Must Switch off Diesel and Should Go For Renewable Energy

Dear friends,

Thanks to the telecommunications sector, every new call and SMS is hurting our environment. Lakhs of massive mobile network towers in our country run on dirty diesel.

Airtel is the market leader and trend-setter of the Indian telecom industry. If we get them to switch to renewable energy, it will set an example for the others to follow. Customers are the mainstay of this industry. Airtel would notice if customers ask them to make their calls green by using clean energy to power company’s mobile towers.

You should ask Airtel to switch to renewable energy.

Several current and potential Airtel subscribers, asking them to switch to renewable energy will help put pressure on them to act. Since the company is bound to provide good service to its subscribers, they will not be able to ignore this feedback.

Like coal and nuclear, oil too is an unsustainable energy option. The Deepwater Horizon oil spill last year showed the dangers of our addiction to oil.[2] Studies conducted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have shown that renewable energy is capable of powering the world.[3] Airtel needs to realise this and quit dirty energy.

Tell them now.

India's solar power generation to be 1,000MW by 2013

New Delhi: India will generate 1,000 MW of solar power by the year 2013, with financial assistance from Power Finance Corp and Rural Electrification Corp, under the government's Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission.

"We would be able to generate 500 MW of solar-thermal power and another 500 MW from photovoltaic cells in the next three years," Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and Renewable Energy Minister Farooq Abdullah said at a joint press conference today.

The Ministry of Power and Ministry of New and Renewable Energy today unveiled the guidelines for selection of New Grid Connected Solar Power Projects.

"PFC and REC would finance some of these projects," Shinde said, adding that Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) will also fund these projects.

Google Energy' subsidiary considers clean power

Google took a step toward entering the energy business with the creation of a subsidiary called Google Energy and a request with a federal agency to buy and sell electricity on the wholesale market.

The search giant formed a Delaware-based company called Google Energy on December 16 of last year, according to Delaware state records. The Federal Register on Tuesday referenced Google Energy's request to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the agency with oversight over the power grid.

Rather than represent a shift beyond Google's core search business, though, the moves are meant to give Google flexibility in pursuing its corporate goal of carbon neutrality, according to a Google representative.

"Right now, we can't buy affordable, utility-scale, renewable energy in our markets," said Google representative Niki Fenwick. "We want to buy the highest quality, most affordable renewable energy wherever we can and use the green credits."

Google already has a very large, 1.6-megawatt solar installation at its Mountain View, Calif., headquarters. But having the ability to buy and sell electricity the way utilities do gives Google the flexibility to use much larger amounts of renewable energy to offset the energy consumption of its operations.

"We don't have any concrete plans. We want the ability to buy and sell electricity in case it becomes part of our portfolio," Fenwick said.

Google is seeking to become a carbon-neutral company by improving the efficiency of its operations, including its energy-hungry data centers. It also has a program of purchasing "high-quality" carbon offsets and it has invested in a renewable energy companies through its philanthropic arm, Google.org.

Google.org has funded technology start-ups in solar, enhanced geothermal, and wind. It also developed PowerMeter, a Web-based home electricity monitoring application offered primarily through utilities.

Outside of those efforts, Google employees are active in exploring the intersection of IT and energy, such as ways to use a network of electric car batteries to stabilize grid frequency. Google also created a partnership with General Electric to lobby for policies to promote clean energy.

At an event to discuss U.S. energy policy last November, Google's director of energy and climate initiatives, Dan Reicher, also indicated that Google could get involved in financing large-scale renewable energy projects, according to reports.

Over the past two years, Google has been active in pushing clean energy and efficiency in a variety of ways without becoming directly involved in the business the way a utility is. Making a request with FERC to buy and sell energy for a company outside the utility business is a highly unusual move, experts told Energy & Environment Daily, which reported on Google Energy on Wednesday.

"It's interesting that they'd want to take on the burdens of being a FERC-regulated public utility," John Decker, a partner in the energy regulation practice at Washington, D.C.'s Vinson & Elkins, told Energy & Environment Daily. But, Decker said, "there's no substitute for actually being in the industry if you want to learn about it."
