Making a solar panel at home can be a lot of fun.
1) Get some copper strips. Cut them and clean them.
2) Place a small strip of the copper on an electric burner (this experiment cannot be done on a gas burner as exposing the copper to fire will not work).
3) Let it heat till the color of the strip turns pink, purple and red. Cook it on the burner till the strip is pitch-black.
4) Turn the heat off and let the strip cool. Hold the strip against running water and scrub off the cupric oxide with your hands. Once all the black is off, you will notice a beautiful red covering on the copper strip. This is cuprous oxide.
5) Place this oxidized strip and a clean copper strip side by side in a glass or plastic container.
6) With the help of an alligator clip, link the clean strip to the positive terminal of an ampere meter.
7) Observe the meter and you will notice that electricity is being generated.
This is a very basic way to make a solar panel at home, but it makes for a great science experiment.
